Among the Narcissi
These are personal paintings. They are charged with
the nostalgia of early family photographs that have
always been a substitute for the first 4 years of my
life preceding my parents’ protracted and messy
transcontinental divorce. That is to say, I have no
memories attached to these photographs, or the era
they illustrate. What they are really “about” is the
lifetime activity of making one’s own narratives
—something one is subconsciously doing all the time,
especially in relationship to one’s parents. So of
course, I have taken liberties with my family
photographs, and have told the only truths and
narratives I “know.” |
