The underlying theme of my work has been a focused
effort toward simplified expression by way of
removal/subtraction. Subjects are drawn from themes
both societal and personal. However, regardless of
the conceptual or figurative source, these subjects
are reduced, distilled, emptied -- resulting in
quiet, contemplative forms. By stripping back the
pretenses of figure and narrative, and working to
express only an underlying tone within the source
material, I hope to engage the onlooker within a
context of immediacy; to allow for interpretation
only within the where, when, and how of the viewer
him or herself.
In
my canvas work,
I exploit physicality to bring attention directly to
the material attributes of surface, mass, extension,
and proximity. A subtractive process is employed to
remove material from the canvas while preserving
tension with thread. The effect is a sculptural form
in two dimensions. It allows for the use of vacancy
to convey something deliberate and tangible, and
engages the exhibition space to participate in the
final expression. |
